Advanced Territory

This cluster covers the more complex and specialised territories of trauma neuroscience — where the science intersects with addiction, epigenetics, dissociation, and a unified theory of why healing works at a biological level.

These articles are deeper and slower than earlier clusters. They require the foundations laid in Clusters 1 through 4. They are not the place to begin.

What this cluster covers

When the core architecture of trauma is understood — how the brain is built, how the nervous system learns threat and safety, what trauma does biologically, and why change is possible — a further set of questions opens up.

This cluster addresses those questions across five territories:

  • How addiction functions as nervous system regulation rather than character failure
  • How the brain constructs emotional experience from prediction and prior learning
  • What epigenetics actually shows about intergenerational trauma — and where the science is still unsettled
  • How the personality can fragment under overwhelming threat, and what that means for healing
  • How predictive processing reframes trauma responses as outdated models running with precision — and healing as the methodical introduction of new ones

All Advanced Territory articles are released in later phases. The full article list is shown below so you can see what is coming and plan where to return.

If you have arrived here directly, the place to begin is Cluster 1 — Brain Hardware. The science in this cluster builds on everything covered in Clusters 1 through 4.

Full article list

Standalone — Nervous System and Addiction

  • D-700 — Self-Medication and Addiction — What the Nervous System Is Actually Doing
Explains why substances and compulsive behaviours temporarily work at a biological level — and why addiction is a nervous system attempting regulation, not a character failure.

Standalone — Emotion

  • D-705 — Constructed Emotion — Lisa Feldman Barrett
How the brain builds emotional experience from prediction, bodily state, and prior learning — and what that means for trauma responses.

Mini-series — Epigenetics and Intergenerational Trauma

  • D-710 — Epigenetics — How Experience Changes Gene Expression
What epigenetics is, how stress leaves marks on gene expression, and how experience gets under the skin at a genetic level.
  • D-715 — Intergenerational Trauma — What the Science Actually Shows
What the evidence actually supports, where it is preliminary, and where popular claims outrun the science.

Standalone — Dissociation entry point

  • D-720 — The Dissociation Spectrum — From Daydreaming to Structural Dissociation
How dissociation runs on a continuum from normal to clinical — and why the same nervous system mechanism underlies all of it. Read this before the Structural Dissociation series.

Series — Structural Dissociation

  • D-725 — Structural Dissociation — Introduction
What structural dissociation is — the theory of how the personality divides into parts under overwhelming threat.
  • D-730 — Structural Dissociation — ANP and EP
The Apparently Normal Part and the Emotional Part — what each does, and why they conflict.
  • D-735 — Structural Dissociation — Living With It
What structural dissociation feels like from the inside — and why it is exhausting and isolating.
  • D-740 — Structural Dissociation — Treatment and Safety
Why treatment follows a specific sequence, why stabilisation must come before processing, and why professional support is required.

Series — Predictive Processing

  • D-745 — Predictive Processing — Introduction
The brain as a prediction machine — constantly generating models of what is about to happen based on past experience.
  • D-750 — Predictive Processing — Trauma as Broken Prediction
How trauma installs prediction models that were accurate at the time and have not been updated since — and why that reframes everything about trauma responses.
  • D-752 — How Healing Updates the Brain — Titration, Pendulation, and the Four Pathways
How healing methodically introduces new predictions across four pathways — and why the dose and rhythm matter.
  • D-755 — Predictive Processing — Dissociation and Fragmented Models
How structural dissociation looks through the predictive processing lens — different parts of the system running different world models simultaneously.
