The brain responds to threat and safety through a set of specialised structures that developed over millions of years.

This cluster examines those structures one by one:

  • The brainstem, which governs survival reflexes and basic arousal
  • The amygdala, which detects and prioritises threat
  • The hippocampus, which provides context, time, and memory integration
  • The prefrontal cortex, which supports reflection, inhibition, and flexibility
  • The limbic system, which coordinates emotion and motivation
  • The neural networks that connect these structures into functional systems

Together, these parts form the biological foundation for everything explored in later clusters.
