The Brain’s Hardware for Threat, Explained
This cluster explores the physical structures of the brain that govern threat, safety, memory, and survival.
The articles here focus on what parts exist, what each one does, and how they work together when danger is present or when healing becomes possible.
They do not teach coping strategies or techniques. They explain the biological machinery that every response runs through.
What this cluster covers
The brain responds to threat and safety through a set of specialised structures that developed over millions of years.
This cluster examines those structures one by one:
- The brainstem, which governs survival reflexes and basic arousal
- The amygdala, which detects and prioritises threat
- The hippocampus, which provides context, time, and memory integration
- The prefrontal cortex, which supports reflection, inhibition, and flexibility
- The limbic system, which coordinates emotion and motivation
- The neural networks that connect these structures into functional systems
Together, these parts form the biological foundation for everything explored in later clusters.

What this cluster does not do
