The previous article explained how consistent practice gradually lowers your threat baseline — and why that change is too slow to see in real time. This article addresses the practical problem that creates: how do you know healing is happening if you cannot see it directly?
How Do You Know You Are Healing?
There is no direct measure — but there are patterns worth learning to notice.

The previous article described how baseline shifts accumulate gradually — too slowly to see in real time, too quietly to announce themselves. This creates a practical challenge. If healing comes without a clear gauge, how do you know it is happening?
The answer is that there is no single indicator. Instead, there are several indirect signals. None is definitive on its own. But when multiple signals begin moving in the same direction over weeks and months, that is not coincidence. That is change.
Here is what to look for.
Reactivity
The same person, the same situation, the same kind of comment — and your response is smaller than it used to be. Not gone. Smaller. The surge still comes, but it rises less sharply.
Recovery time
How quickly you return to baseline after being triggered. This is often the first shift — before intensity decreases, duration begins to shorten. The system still activates. It simply settles faster.
Threshold
Situations that once overwhelmed you now feel merely uncomfortable. The trigger is still recognizable, but it no longer crosses the same internal line.
Duration
What once lasted days now fades in hours. Arguments resolve more quickly. Low moods lift sooner. Episodes still occur — they just do not linger as long.
Subtraction
You begin to notice the absence of something that used to feel constant — a background hum of tension you no longer carry in the same way. Often, you only recognize it once it has softened.
Physical ease
Your body reflects the change. The jaw unclenches more often. The shoulder and back pain are rare. Sleep becomes a little more reliable. There is less strain in simply existing.
Capacity
Things that once felt overwhelming become manageable. Not easy, but manageable. Your window of tolerance expands, even if only slightly.
Relationship texture
Interactions that once felt threatening begin to feel more neutral. You enter conversations with less defensiveness and leave them with less emotional residue.
Spontaneity
Moments of ease or pleasure arise naturally — and do not immediately trigger guilt, suspicion, or the sense that something is about to go wrong.
The return of curiosity
Your attention begins to move beyond survival. You notice things and feel drawn to explore them. This signals that your system has regained enough capacity to look outward.
Retrospect
Healing is rarely visible day to day. It becomes clear only in hindsight. The meaningful comparison is not today versus yesterday — it is who you are now versus who you were six months ago.
What the pattern means
Not every indicator will apply to you. Some will resonate immediately. Others may not.
What matters is the overall pattern across time. One signal shifting is interesting. Several shifting together — even subtly, even inconsistently — points to a deeper change taking place.
Healing is not something you suddenly feel one morning. It is something you recognize, in retrospect, through a collection of small, quiet shifts.
You will not see healing arriving.
You will recognize it when you look back at where you were.
